It'll probably always be true that having good technology doesn't necessarily lead to making good decisions about how to use it. I didn't really get the idea of tags until I started using delicious, so my Zotero tags started out being too hierarchical. I've relied on collections more than tags but I think there's too much duplication between my collections. I'm thinking of improving my tags and then getting rid of most of the collections but it could take a lot of work to get it right.

<blockquote>I’ll probably try it once I’ve got my Zotero collections and tags in better order.</blockquote>

When you figure out how to do this, let me know! Because of various crazy things I've done with my computer, I've got 3-5 different profiles with different libraries, and need to merge them into one when I get a chance. I find it interesting how making Zotero collections public has made me more self-conscious of how organized my research and tags are, since I'm making them public. Not self-conscious enough, mind you, to do something about it. But soon, hopefully.
