Technology and Great War Research

The Great War Forum now has a sub-forum called Using The Technology devoted to discussions of how to apply IT to First World War research. This could be a good place for digital historians to reach out to amateur researchers and show them new tools and techniques. It should also be a valuable source of ideas about how to use computers for research, and examples of how technology can make a difference in practice. I’ve already been telling everyone there about how cool Zotero is.

What I really, really want

I’ve been playing with Google Custom Search and although it’s good it would be much better if it could recognize metadata in microformats, RDF, or any other formats that metadata might be found in. And if it could also scrape data off web pages using regular expressions (sort of like Feed43 but better). And if you could create custom search fields and define how they map to Google Base fields, Freebase fields, metadata tags, and scraped data.

And I want the moon on a stick.

Nearly a year ago I started a project to digitize T. E. Sandall’s history of the 1/5th Lincolnshire regiment in the First World War, and in summer I published an interim version. I would’ve finished it a long time ago if I didn’t have anything else to do, but original work in peer reviewed printed journals has to come first because it’ll look better on my CV. Now I’ve got time to do some more work on it, and having had a break from it I can reassess what I’m trying to do. Below is an update on what’s new.
