Yes, that's a good solution to the dilemma, and a lot easier than modding. I don't know what options will be available in the full game, but there was nothing like that in the demo. Even RTS games with no educational pretensions usually have options for things like starting resources and resource rates.

One way around that is to be able to turn off "features." Using a realistic market economy might be great for class, but may not be so much fun (especially if you are playing the French). I know A&A had, at least in some versions, a "no Russian attack of first turn" optional rule. Similar, but much more powerful things can be done with with sim/games.

I wasn't even sure what criteria to judge it by. Is it a game? Is it a teaching tool? If they make it too enjoyable they might lose credibility in the school market, but if they make it too educational it can't compete in the entertainment market. In either case, it isn't likely to be well balanced for competitive gaming, so there's not much there for hardcore strategy gamers.

I too tried the demo and draw a very similar conclusion. My problem is that it is a game and therefore should be entertaining. I find very little time to play and therefore when I do I want to enjoy the experience. It is for this reason that the demo only lasted a few days before I returned to the almighty Medieval Total War 2. I would suggest everyone put this epic game on their Christmas list.
